The Sweeney & The Professionals
Why is that when cars crashed in 70s Cop shows they always burst into flames even after a minor shunt?

The best one ever on the professionals . was when bodie and Doyle turned up at the start of an episode wearing matching red tracksuits it was comedy gold .

Problem is a lot cops copied the behavior of the guys on the telly, Living near Baltimore, I reckon the Wire has a lot to answer for.

Re: The Sweeney & The Professionals
There was an episode of The new Avengers filmed with Shaw and Collins playing villains, just before The Professionals went into production.
There's a nudge-wink moment at the end when Collins says to Shaw 'we'll have to work together again soon.'

Used to love to watch it just to see if Gordon Jackson remembered to limp from week to week.

The Sweeney and Minder were/are brilliant.
The Professionals was alright but not as good as the others.

Even the closing title music in the Sweeney is quality and brings back good memories of those times.

As soon as I saw this thread, I thought of you.

Not in a gay way, of course.

Utter cock!

Unbelievable.

Minder was great until they ran out of story lines for Terry, I actually liked the nephew episodes.

Re: The Sweeney & The Professionals
I think The Sweeney and Minder (except when Dennis Waterman left and the floppy haired 'nephew' or whatever came in) were brilliant tv and still stand up.

But the Professionals was a load of utter cock. I cant stand either of the actors TO THIS DAY. IN ANYTHING AT ALL.
Gordon Jackson was ok though

I bought a Ford Granada back in my early 20's because of the Sweeney. 3 litre V6 in metallic brown with matching vinyl roof. fackin 'andsome!

Preferred The Sweeney, it was grittier, more realistic. Both programmes had good cars in though.

Re: The Sweeney & The Professionals
there used to be an excellent Sweeney web site.
there was a photo of Jack's flat and you could click on the items in it and get a few lines of text about them - his sheepskin coat slung over the back of a chair, the bottle of johnnie walker red label, players navy cut fags and the string and nail picture of a yacht on the wall.
brilliant, brilliant series with john thaw the archetypal DI
spawned a thousand imitators in the real old bill through the 70's and 80's, very close in terms of culture within a real CID office
no idea why all the cars burst into flames though. british Leyland workmanship?

Klansman was banned due to race tensions at the time.

Funny I was watching UK gold and they showed the same episode I can distinctly remember as a kid with Patrick Mower playing an Aussie crook.

Watched an episode of The Professionals a while back, no sure which one but it was centred around a bowling club in, I believe, "south London".

It just seemed to get more & more camp as it progressed. Could have been a pantomime by the time the end credits rolled.

Why was that episode banned?

Andrews started filming / rehearsing with Shaw but they canned it due to bad chemistry.

If you get the BluRay's it has loads of insight and extras, including the, banned, 'Klansman' episode. Love it!

Did anyone here play Sweeney at school?

You'd mob into 2s or 3s pick a villain (a mongy kid) and Sweeney him which meant pushing him up against a wall, yelling "you're nicked" and giving him a gentle (as in not going all out) kicking.

The teachers were all against it. They didn't mind the kicking but hated being yelled at.
